Fresh eyes.

Due to the need to rush all my school work during this period of time (another 4 weeks more to go), I’ve a lot less time for studies. I guess I probably can only spend 1 full day per week doing studies instead of the usual daily studies. In a way, that is actually a good thing!

Just as humans tend to get immuned to things that they do daily, I get immune to the mistakes I made during my daily studies. Doing studies only once per week allows me to look at my drawings with fresh eyes and a lot of mistakes become apparent.

One of these issues is line sensitivity, something which I’m currently thinking of ways to fix and improve; the other is a little bit too much over-construction when drawing from life.

Drawings from the past 6+ weeks, from oldest to newest:

Head is way off in above drawing, so I re-draw the thing again, which is below:

Head in right drawing below is too close to clavicle and too pudgy:

Below are a series of work I did for my final year project. Did mostly illustrations last semester so I thought I wanna balance things out with some character designs. These are done in cel-shading style, something I always wanted to try. Should have paid more attention to the line sensitivity instead of using all-consistent lines, but well….

The story is about a retired general who rides on dinosaurs around the cities and other places, using all kinds of weapons to bomb the buildings and loot the money. While he’s at it, he faces similar rivals who also ride dinos, and also has to fend off the military who is sent in to stop him from carrying out his crimes. The dinosaurs are genetically modified dinos, and I deliberately stylize their proportions quite a bit. I tried to design the whole thing around a military theme and make the characters look goofy and wacky.

This is the main character, Nutcase (yes, that’s his name). Has deformed lower body due to excessive alcohol drinking and his legs spread out at 45 degree angle from pelvis. His default weapon is throwing molotov cocktails.

The pink fireworks that’s splurting out from the bottle is a “mechanized” version of the molotov cocktail. More powerful, of course. The words say “Violent Janet” (since some cocktail names are named after ladies, like Bloody Mary and Shady Lady etc).

The first dinosaur. Lots of changes were made before arriving at this shit. This is the Giraffatitan (not Brachiosaurus), the same species of dinosaur that is on display at the Humboldt Museum in Berlin (Museum für Naturkunde). Each dinosaur is designed and inspired based on military vehicles. In this case, this guy functions as a mobile missile launcher.

Originally, I wanted to do several more species of dinos, but there just wasn’t enough time. However, I’ll be working on those after graduation. In fact, Dromiceiomimus (military scout) and Spinosaurus (heavy artillery) are currently in the works.

Below is Madame X, the wife of the main character. Still thinking of how to fix the background:

And below is the modified jeep with tank treads that Madame X rides on during her robberies with Nutcase. Still need to work on this one a bit more and re-design the 4 panes at the back:

Another 4 more weeks to go, and I have one last final illustration (“The River to Paradise”) to do before this chapter of my life closes. Will post that when school finishes, which is 16 May 2012, and hopefully, I can finish that shit! :D

And beyond that fateful day, I will be bravely going back to a 9-6 office job, staring at countless spreadsheets everyday, all day, but the spirit of art lives on!

Good day!

Love Thy Pencil

Nothing much to say this post, but….drawing is fun.
I’ve only scanned in 70% of the drawings this time.

Several drawings in pencil done during life drawing session this week.
Didn’t get to complete and fix the 20 min poses, though. Damn! It’s always like this. I wish the school can give us 1 hour poses so that I’ve more time to get down stuff.
To make things even harder, the old gentleman keep asking me to draw large enough to fill up the A3 page! :D

To hack out one drawing in 20 – 30 min in A3 size and still get everything to look correct truly requires one to have the skills of a master, which I’m not. In a 20 min pose, that basically means 1 min to get down the gesture, 1 min to fix all proportions, 5 mins for construction, 5 mins for drawing anatomy and 7 mins for photographic rendering? LOL, that’s beyond me! Wish I could slow down time.

Model is somewhere between 5.5 to 6+ heads:

The usual suspects:

Same pose from photo reference. 3 fucking attempts. The last one probably looks the most decent from the 3.

In a post made some months ago, I vowed never to use the pencil again, but I shall eat back my words now. While the pen’s line is sleek and elegant and the Cretacolor oil pencils produces warm rich browns, the former is simply too stressful to draw with in longer drawings, because I feel so afraid to put down the wrong line etc, and I can’t concentrate / visualize properly because of that, while the latter needs to be sharpened every 1 fucking minute to keep the point as sharp as a pen’s tip, and that gets on my nerves. With the pencil, I can erase if I really need to. The only problem with the pencil is that under direct light, there’s graphite buildup and sheen and I can’t see what’s on the paper since the graphite reflects most of the light. But I’m back to using the HB pencil now.

Tibia and kneecap studies. I realized there are many, many parts of the human body which I have no idea how to draw in close-up views, especially the shoulder area, the knee area (complex as fuck) and the elbow area. I’m starting with the knee first:

Resolution for the next 3 weeks:
i) Get more comfortable with drawing the knee
ii) more hand studies

Bu Bu Gao Sheng!

The usual Chinese New Year (CNY) greetings like “Gong Xi Fa Cai” and “Nian Nian You Yu” don’t quite apply to art, but my favorite greeting, “Bu Bu Gao Sheng”, does! This greeting means “Soar to greater heights”, which has always been my desire.

When I was a kid, I used to love CNY. You get to visit relatives’ houses and meet cousins which you haven’t seen for years, and you can talk of the past, of those sweet childhood days.

But good times don’t last. Everyone has soared to greater heights at my relatives’ end, except me. Accountant, senior accountant, computer analyst, computer programmer, aerospace engineer, building materials specialist (something along that line), civil worker. Needless to say, their salaries are in the range of S$4000 – $8000, excluding bonuses.

If I had transferred this amount of time and effort that I spent on art to some other fields of study, I would probably be truly “Bu Bu Gao Sheng” by now.
I guess there’s no turning back, only going forward, and see where this crap will take me at the end of the day. A place in Paradise, or the Devil’s dining table?

This year, I will wear a mask when visiting my relatives’ houses. The usual questions will pop up: Do you have a girlfriend, do you have a girlfriend? No, I’ve no girlfriend, but I’ve a wife and her name is Art, ok? Now, shoo off.

Anyway, below drawings done from life during the past 3 weeks.

Forgot to bring my sharpener along and had to do these drawings in thick chunky lines. What a downer! Spoilt my mood:

Some more drawings from life. THIS time, I remembered to bring my sharpener:

Didn’t have time to finish below drawing. I wish each pose could be 40 mins or more.
Anything less than that, then how is anyone going to have time to observe the anatomy and still get everything down, unless one is say, a top-tier figure drawing expert like Ron Lemen, who can paint a realistic portrait in 60 freakin’ seconds??!!

Was doing below drawing from the model when some Japanese TV station crew came into the room and wanted to shoot us students doing life drawing. But the model said he was uncomfortable with the whole thing, and thus, the TV crew went off without shooting.
Which is good, because if my drawings happen to be on Japanese TV, ugh.

Note to self: head too big.

Below drawing on the right is my 2nd attempt. I will do a 3rd attempt:

10 min sketches:

Memorizing the basic possible movements of the Epicranius, O-Oculi and Corrugator:

The Lamy Safari black ink debuts starting below, after I’ve finally used up my bottle of blue ink.

The big black areas of ink and the thicker black lines were done using a fountain brush pen. For pure fun:

Note to self: Orientation of Vastus Medialis is wrong in the right leg (the one closer to the pillar).

Resolution for the next 3 weeks:
i) Usual figure studies
ii) Start adding the thumb to the hand sketches
iii) Continue with arm anatomy studies and learn about the flexor group of muscles
iv) Learn the basic movements of the facial muscles
v) Continue trying to achieve a likeness in the face drawings

The Time is Now!

I’m back! Officially.

Some updates:

1) There’s only like 4+ months left before graduation day. Will I become an art legend on graduation day? No way. Will I be in complete shit on graduation day? Absolutely.

2) Cough is much better now and all small ailments are gone. Tinnitus has gotten much better and now comes on an on-off basis. I suspect it’s the pile of medication I’ve been taking the last couple of months and medicine has been known to cause tinnitus.

3) The pain in the mouth was due to 2 wisdom teeth! Never knew I had wisdom teeth. Fortunately, the daylight robbery costs were mostly subsidized by the government.

4) The 3D Compositing module at school sucks big time. 3D modeling with Maya was already worse than hell for me, and I can foresee this composting module will destroy me. And no, this semester, there’s no figure drawing, so we have to attend it on our own initiative by joining other classes. Does knowing 3D compositing gives one an advantage in getting a job, since the assumption is that art students who knows 3D stuff have an advantage over those who don’t? But the question begs: If I want someone who knows 3D stuff, why don’t I hire a full-fledged 3D guy who knows how to draw instead? This is one thing that angers me to no end.

5) Got myself some new toys recently : Cretacolor oil pencils.

They’re only available in 2 shades of Sepia, Sanguine and the usual black and white, but they function exactly like the Polychromos. Only thing is the color choice is too little but that doesn’t bug me, since I love browns.

The pencils got used up fast, so I made another trip to the store to stock up more toys.
Blue thing on the left is a water brush. The stuff in the 2nd picture above are a brush pen and a bottle of chinese ink. It looks like some bottled chinese medicine, though.

Below, some drawings for the past 6 weeks. The rest aren’t posted here as they are repetitive in nature:

I was sure the distance between her brow line and base of nose is longer greater than the distance between the hair line and brow line, but it ends up looking weird. I will have another try soon:

Dinosaur studies for this semester’s project, which is also my final year project. This is a video-game based concept project instead of the illustration-based ones I did earlier, as I wanted more variety in my portfolio. I deliberately set up the story such that I can draw human characters, dinosaurs, environments, props and vehicles to make it more well-rounded.

My 3rd piece of illustration done last semester. I guess I’ve pushed the concept further than the 1st piece, the Nyonya shit, but looking at it now, I wished I’ve pushed it even further and make the scene more dramatic.

The story is about 2 captains from 2 teams competing in the semi-finals, set in a fantasy world. The game is not true basketball; it’s Bastardball, where there are no rules, just balls. In the scene, the little guy is attempting a last minute Slam-Dunk while the big guy is about to crush him with both hands.

The colorful trail of thing was inspired by Marvel Vs. Capcom’s “stroboscopic effect”, whereby whenever the character unleashes their signature move, there’ll be a series of “phantom images” that follow after him.

The lecturer for this semester’s module commented that it looks rather flat, and there’s no field of depth. I think it’s probably because of the background. At the end of this semester, I’ll find some ways to fix it, probably by throwing in more smoke and making it darker.

Below painting was supposed to be the “One Night in Paris” piece mentioned in a previous post months ago, but due to having only 3 weeks to do this and a heavy shortage of time, I realized there was no way I could pull off anything like drawing French / Parisian buildings in a stylized manner, since one would need to be familiar with Parisian architecture and grasp the essence to stylize it, otherwise the result would look nothing like Parisian architecture.

And thus….I changed the story completely and did a fantasy town environment and based the design of the houses very mildly on old French cottages.

Same comments by the lecturer for this piece. Too flat. Again, I’ll try to throw in some fog in the distance and blur out / de-saturate the far buildings.

Resolution for the next 3 weeks:
i) continue the usual construction practice

ii) try to be proficient at drawing the muscles of the forearm and visualize the turning of the forearm. This forearm thing is confusing me to no end, and is probably the most confusing and hardest thing I’ve come across so far. About the only thing that could be as difficult as this forearm shit is the learning curve needed to understand Vilppu’s gesture drawings previously.

Next update: 21 Jan 2012

And not to forget……..Happy New Year 2012! May all dreams come true! :D
The fight….has only just begun!

Good day!

Site Notice II

No, I’m still alive and have been drawing as usual!

The site will be updated on 31 Dec 2011, the last day of this year. I promise.

The reason for the lack of updates is due to an overwhelming surge of ailments that hit my body during this period, starting with dizzy spells, then runny nose and flu and sore throat, followed by cough (still ongoing) and tinnitus (still ongoing non-stop). Worse yet, at the time of this writing, my tooth is aching, resulting in a headache near the temporal region. Maybe this could be the cause of the tinnitus.

Will need to see the dentist tomorrow. Hope all goes well. Aye.

Good day!

Of Art and Fun : La La Lay-Lay La-La Lay!

Been almost one month since the last update!

1) The Koel and his wife seems to have flown somewhere else; their cries are rarer now, though it still happens.

2) A new bird is in town, and its cries sound like a stiff “Eeek-eeek-eeek-eeek-eeekk!!!!!” The cries are even more piercing than the Koel’s. It’s like Jurassic Park 3 : you think the T-Rex is badass but along comes Spinosaurus! Good thing is that this new bird only starts “eek-ing” from 6 PM – 7 PM. It could well be the female Koel but with a different call.

3) Was doing my digital painting last Sunday, when suddenly….there was a monstrous “FLOP!!!!” sound at my window, and before I knew it, I saw this huge black thing smashing itself flat against the window pane! WHAT DA???!!! Then, it fell downwards (I live on the 7th floor) but I was too shocked to take a look. Maybe it mistook the black window pane for some hole which it could fly into? It must be a crow, since it was huge and all black. I mean, seriously….what DA??!

4) The Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum in Singapore is purchasing 3 Diplodocus fossils and if all goes well, they will reach our shores around 2015. Finally!
I could imagine myself wearing a dinosaur cap + dinosaur t-shirt carrying a dinosaur haversack with a dinosaur toy in my hand, squeezing in the crowd, getting excited with thousands of like-minded folks, mainly young kids below 9 years old….

Below 14 drawings from the life sessions at school:

1 min gestures. Got a bit surprised after the teacher said “1 min gestures”, since it’s usually 2 – 5 mins:

5 mins:

Definitely starting to get tired of Deep Red as the color seems very distracting. Van Dyke Brown is a bit dark, so I’ll try Burnt Sienna and Burnt Umber in future.

3 weeks ago, I realized that by eating snacks during life drawing sessions at school, I could rid all my stress and no longer feel uptight about the drawings’ outcome. Now, life drawing sessions don’t seem scary anymore; they seem fun! Lemon tarts and small custard puffs save the day!

The Copper pencil seems to be breaking very easily. Not sure why, but it seems all 2 pencils’ lead are broken inside the wood casing, and breaks every time its sharpened.

Fuck metal! Every time I draw metal objects, I need to draw the entire environment that’s being reflected: ceilings, lights, furniture, floor, windows, rails, fridge, cups, tiles, and even myself (figure drawing?!)!

But I will definitely do more of such textural / material studies from now, to understand their workings better, in order to translate the knowledge to digital painting. Rocks, water, clouds etc.

The scribbly-looking gestures below at the lower half of the page and the one following it are 30 second gestures. Wanted to try something exciting without boarding a roller-coaster. Not enough time to eye proportions and no time for simple volumes either! LOL
Will do more of these for fun.

These larger head drawings are all distorted. Will try to improve on them next time:

Have added the illio-tibial tract, quads, adductors and G-Medius onto the construction:

The “basketball match” painting won’t be ready till the next update or later, so I’m throwing in another school work piece, which is about 85% completed.

Below was the original sketch:

2 things the lecturer pointed out harshly upon seeing it really made me see the light:

i) The lady looks like an old lady, and the near arm is totally wrong! I need to take note of the joint constraints of the human body in future.

ii) Art isn’t always about science; it should be artistic and fun. I’m too engrossed in the technical aspects that I forgot what art is about! Maybe I’m the only idiot in school who is suffering from this illness. Maybe I should quit art and study mechanical engineering instead! :D LOL

Took the lecturer’s words seriously and re-did the damn thing. I guess art isn’t all about boxes, cylinders, deltoids and whatnot. LOL :D His words will always be engraved in my mind, hopefully!

I name this “A day in Autumn”, starring Little Booyah. LOL

The original painting was rather vector-ish in style, as I have no idea how I should paint it. The selection of colors are the hardest part of the painting, and took 2+ painful weeks just coming up with the colors I like. The background colors are influenced by one of Fujita’s piece. The thick mass of leaves at the top and the overall yellow-greenish hue of the picture were added after the lecturer’s suggestion.

The days ahead: Currently aiming to start and finish another piece titled “One night in Paris” before end of this semester. Nothing to do with Paris Hilton’s “1 night in Paris” sex tape, though. Not sure if I can finish it….but….this is my last chance at life, now or never. :x

This semester is coming to an end in 4 weeks! How fast time flies! :D
And yet, it seems like it has only been a month ago since I quit my job.

Resolution for the next 4 weeks:
i) Continue with usual figure studies
ii) do some textural still life studies
iii) be more familiar with the shape of the quadriceps femoris
iii) move on to the hamstring muscle group of the leg and if there’s time, the muscles of the lower calf

Next update:14 November 2011. Yeah, it will be a month, but that’s when this crazy semester ends, and then it will be a normal life again.

Good day! ;)

It feels so good….

….to just lie in my tender bed once in a while, on a quiet night, snuggling my face against the soft pillow, hugging my bolster tightly, and not think about anything….the worries of the world starts fading away…and time slows down….

I bought several packs of ear plugs for the family to help reduce the sleep-destroying cries of the Koel. They worked! The cries of the Koel gets snuffed out by 80 – 95%.

Apparently, in Australia, people are facing similar issues:
http://external-brain.redwolf.com.au/2003/12/18/annoying-bloody-birds/

“Fucking thing”, “Little bastard”, “Bloody birds” etc., are some of the titles awarded to this bird. According to that site, the other type of sound I also frequently hear, namely an equally sharp but repetitive “Wook-Wook-Wook-Wook-Wook-Wook”, is made by the female Koel, as opposed to the male’s, which goes “woo……Woo….WOO!!! WOOO!!!!!! WOOOOOO!!!!!!).

I’m scanning a lot less drawings this time as re-sizing them takes too much time and since most of them are repetitive studies.

Dozens of drawings done in class over the past 3 weeks.

And below, the usual studies done at home. During the past 3 weeks, I’ve made an attempt to add the Serratus Ant, Lats-Dorsi, Infraspinatus and Teres Major to the construction.

I miss my pen, and so…..

The upper ends of the Lats-Dorsi, the part that twists and then connects to the humerus, is giving me a headache especially when seen from the front, as it’s very difficult to visualize the twist and how it fits into the humerus:

Below are some school work, part of my final year project. Original painting was about 9000+ pixels wide.

The idea was to convey a Nyonya sewing her stuff on a quiet day.
The intention was to convey a sense of calm and tranquility but I didn’t succeed in that. The “mood” is wrong, I guess. Another challenge was that since this was a setting based on reality, I didn’t dare to push stuff too far or it will end up looking totally unrelated to the Peranakan theme.

One of the lecturers has since told me to study the works of Goro Fujita. I never knew what art was truly about until I saw this guy’s shit. His paintings beamed with insane mood and emotions, and I could actually feel it in my bones. What is this power…..???

If Vilppu has shown me what figure drawing was about, then Fujita has shown me what art is about.

I’ve always thought that art was 100% about technical accuracy and nothing else, but that has all changed. Art, it seems, is really more about aesthetics than perfect draftsmanship. Not to say the latter isn’t crucial, but surely the layman on the street will be more interested to look at art that looks visually exciting but technically imperfect, than to look at art that is visually boring but technically perfect. I can’t believe I realize this only now…..what a big fool I am…..aye…..

A lesson learned…..a bit too late…..but better than never.

Some work-in-progress of my next piece, which is about 2 captains of different basketball teams facing off in a match. Small guy vs. punk:

I’ve since realized that they’re too crappy. Heck, the two dumpy duck-like characters at the top look like they’re falling over! I re-did the designs again:

Working out the layout for the scene and changing some stuff in the digital version:

Final designs of the 2 characters. I noticed that the ends of the shoes of the first character actually resembles the glans penis! LOL :D

His right arm was supposed to be resting on a stand, but I didn’t draw that in. I deliberately made his lower legs super-long. LOL

Partial color studies and logos. I’m not trained in logo design! LOL
The team names are inspired by the names of the muscles, though I changed “Sartorius” to “Sartoras”. Too lazy to think of new names:

Hopefully, I can complete the painting at around the time of next update. Time is running too short.

The days ahead: Based on the resolutions made in my previous post, I was supposed to do a self-portrait + outdoor drawings, but due to lack of time + bad health, I didn’t. OK, next time!

Resolutions for the next 3.5 weeks:
i) Gesture, construction studies as usual
ii) Get better at drawing the Lats-Dorsi
iii) Learn how to wrap the Gluteus Medius and Maximus over the volumes
iv) 1 self-portrait
v) Draw at the 3 Gardens! :x

Woo. WOOO. WOOO!!! WOOOOO!!!!

Recently, I had my sleep disturbed by this unknown type of bird that came into my neighbourhood. This bird comes around August to December every year and starts making that noise that goes a very sharp high-pitch “Woo!”…”WOO!!!!”…”WOOOO!!!!!!”.

The din starts at approx 4:45 AM onwards and ends at 7 – 8 AM.
Maybe it thinks it’s a rooster. Although there’s only 1 bird here, the noise is loud enough to shriek through the neighbourhood.

For a tiny little bird to project such a loud noise across such an area, its internal strength (aka “nei gong” in Mandarin) must be supreme. Perhaps it has mastered the Nine-Fold Yang technique in Louis Cha’s novels.

I did a search online to try to find this bitch’s species, and realized that it’s called “Koel” (or “Koyal”). It’s infamous “signature attack” can be listened to here:

Very cute cuddly bird, but when it destroys one’s much-needed sleep everyday which could lead to mental illnesses in the longer term, it is no longer cute or funny. I hope one eagle/owl/bird of death can visit my neighbourhood ASAP. I just SOOOO want to strangle the shit out of this bastard!

———————————–

While I’m not a fan of Renoir’s paintings, he once said, “You come to nature with your theories, and she knocks them all flat.”

For my case, it’s “Guy goes to life drawing session to draw from Nature but She makes an eunuch out of him”. Hmmpp!

Below stuff from the life drawing classes from the past 3 weeks. 5, 10, 15 and 30 min poses:

Below series of box figures were done about 3 weeks ago; the teacher told us explicitly he wanted to see boxes:

Life drawings last week. Screwed up very badly for these 2 poses. Brain goes blank and hand trembles with intense fear. I think they were 15 and 30 min respectively:

Below was the first attempt in a life drawing session to try to wrap torso muscles around the geometric forms. Legs and arms are untouched. The only thing, though, is that the result looks totally different from the actual model. The teacher always says, “You’re analyzing the model, not copying”. But still, I would like to have the best of both worlds! Maybe in future. Aye aye.

The usual suspects:

Have started setting the eyes into the head construction:

Have started learning about the Serratus Anterior and some experimentation with nose construction. This muscle seems even more complex than the deltoid to draw. It’s a good thing that in real life, the external obliques, pectoralis major and Lats. Dorsi partly cover this muscle, which means I only need to draw the visible portion! YAY! :D

After producing 2 hideous pieces of crappy self-portraits 3 weeks ago, I made another attempt. This time, it’s only 3% construction and the rest relies mainly on observation.
Proportions are much better than last 2, but I still want to draw like Sargent and Loomis! :) Oh yeah, I made the hair look more voluminous:

First foray into learning how to draw stylized, pretty girls. I realized I know nothing about drawing pretty girls at all! :( The 2 larger ones took about 30 – 45 mins. More practice on these from now on.

They say love can be nurtured. Can it?
Such was the case with my color pencils. The Medium Flesh and Deep Red are love at first sight, but I’m finding myself gradually swooning over the stable color produced by Van Dyck Brown. The latter is not as vibrant as the other two, but the brown just look so…..calm and soothing. The brown complements Copper and Black very well compared to the Medium Flesh + Deep Red + Black combo.

Bought some pencil extenders to prolong life of the color pencils. Problem is, when the pencil gets too short, I need to use a spanner to wank it out as the fingers are not able to grip the tip. LOL

The days ahead: Presidential Election has come and gone. Even if a bed bug gets elected, Singapore will still function as normal. As expected, Tony Tan won. Aye aye! Boring, Jules! I should have withdrawn all my bank savings and bet on that, then I would be rich. Assuming anyone would want to bet against Tony Tan winning.

Resolution for the next 3 weeks:
i) Do the usual suspects.
ii) Learn about the Inguinal Ligament, Erector Spinae and Lats. Dorsi (yay finally! My favorite muscle!) and try to wrap them around the construction.
iii) Do at least 1 more self-portrait, and visit the Three Gardens to draw. I must go out these 3 weeks to draw!
iv) Do a couple of still life.
v) Continue with learning about cartoons.
vi) Do better at the next life drawing session this Friday and screw up LESS!

Next update: 18 September 2011 (2011 is ending soon? How can it be??!!!)

Good day,

Majulah Singapura!

It’s Singapore’s 46th birthday today! I know, I know. This country is far from being perfect, but….at least it doesn’t have floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, typhoons, hurricanes, avalanches, famine, droughts, snowstorms, volcanic eruptions, nuclear plant explosions, wars, mass gun killings, random suicide bombings, mafia shooting with cops in broad daylight and mass street protests that close entire airports. While there’s a lot of room for improvement for the current government, well….at the very least, this country has never faced paralysis in the government since independence.

My only gripe, though, is that art schools in Singapore pale in comparison to their foreign counterparts. The government should throw in hundreds of millions of $ to setup a new art school here called “Art Center College of Design, Singapore”, and hire world-renowned art masters to teach here.

We already have enough management universities here and need no more! :x Or perhaps the government can coax the famous art schools in the US to come and setup affiliate branches here. I await the day when I could see the affiliate building of Art Center, SVA, Art Students League and perhaps Beaux-Arts as well. LOL :D

“Your hands are too big!”
“Your feet are humongous!”
“Your thighs are giant!”
“Your feet looks like Donald Duck’s feet!”
“Your legs are too long! You have a tendency to draw long legs!”

Those were the exact words the old lecturer said to me during the sessions. I didn’t even realized these mistakes before! Now that I look at it….he’s right!
Will definitely keep these stuff in mind next session. Figure drawing from life is so incredibly difficult! ARGH!!!!

Here they are (5 mins to 30 mins). Gesture and synthetic forms, rather than any actual anatomy:

Have started adding the deltoid. The Deltoid is the most complex muscle I’ve encountered at this point. In complex poses, this muscle becomes even more confusing to draw.

I just realized last week that the humerus does not attach to the clavicle, but only to the scapula! Crap! And I’ve been drawing it as being attached to the clavicle all along. There is some gap between the clavicle and the humerus, though. I’ve always been very curious what exactly does “humerus” means, and after some checking, it seems to mean “shoulder” in Latin:

Have started adding the rectus abdominis at this stage. The 8 divisions of this muscle is kinda confusing, so I’m just drawing in the simplified divisions first:

Have started constructing the eye. Will spend the next 1 month on this before moving into the nose. The long vertical lines around the eyes are cross-contours.

I’ve come to discover that whenever I use construction lay-in for self-portraits, the face tends to end up TOO LONG!!!!! Crap.
The distance between hairline to brow line, brow line to base of nose and base of nose to chin bottom seems correct, but I guess it’s because the face is too narrow that’s why it looks so long.
Will attempt more of these to find out the problem.

The death of my first Polychromos pencil. “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

Have started learning how to draw cartoons. This is SO MUCH HARDER and challenging than I thought. I used to think drawing from life is hard enough, but drawing cartoons is not much better. In fact, it seems even harder than life drawing of any kind. It just gets harder and harder! I guess these are considered the first cartoons I’ve ever drawn in my life. :D Before these were 2D kindergarten-style stick figures! LOL
Need to practice more of these:

The days ahead:Working on the last part of the first piece of my final year project illustration now. If all goes well, it should be ready by next post. The mere thought of holding my half-baked portfolio and going into the real world trying to land any job really shatters the last remaining ball that I’ve. I really hope companies in the creative industries need toilet cleaners and coffee boys like me. I promise to work really hard, work for free and not complain. QUE SERA SERA!!!!!

Resolution for the next 3 weeks:
i) Usual gesture + construction
ii) Continue with drawing eyes and planes of the head
iii) Improvise the drawing of the rectus abdominis
iv) Add the external obliques onto the construction
v) Draw a couple more self-portraits
vi) Practice drawing cartoon heads

Next update:29 Aug 2011

Good day!
